Will Grier Back in Dallas: Cowboys Sign QB for Depth After Dak Prescott Injury

Following starter Dak Prescott’s absence due to a calf injury, the Dallas Cowboys have added depth to the quarterback position by re-signing Will Grier. Grier, who previously played for the Cowboys for three years, rejoins the organization after a brief run with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Grier’s signing follows Prescott’s injury sustained during the Cowboys’ victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in week six. The team is being cautious, so Grier’s presence is a necessary precaution, even though preliminary reports indicate Prescott’s injury is not serious.

Grier and the Cowboys are getting back together with this transaction.  Grier, who was previously selected in the third round by the Carolina Panthers in 2019, joined the Cowboys in 2021 and played for them for the following three seasons. His familiarity with the coaching staff and offensive scheme of the Cowboys should facilitate a seamless return to the organization.

Grier’s return gives the quarterback room a veteran arm.  Throughout his career, he has started two NFL games, both in 2019 with the Panthers.  Grier demonstrated his abilities and acquired useful professional experience during his time in Carolina, even if he was not given a permanent starting position.

Grier is now ranked below Cooper Rush and Prescott on the Cowboys’ quarterback depth chart. While Prescott heals, Rush, who has shown himself to be a dependable backup, will probably start.  In addition to offering more insurance, Grier’s presence enables the Cowboys to delay Prescott’s return to the field.

The future of Trey Lance in Dallas is also called into question by this signing. Lance was expected to contend for the backup quarterback job after being acquired in a trade from the San Francisco 49ers shortly before the season began. Grier’s presence, however, makes Lance’s position on the team less obvious.

While Prescott heals, the Cowboys will probably have three quarterbacks on their active roster. This tactic gives the group flexibility and guarantees they have adequate coverage at the game’s most critical position.

Will Grier provide stability and depth as the Cowboys navigate the upcoming weeks without their best quarterback? He is a great asset as the Cowboys try to keep up their momentum in a challenging NFC East because of his familiarity with the squad and previous NFL experience.
