The Javier Báez Conundrum: Can the Tigers Overcome His Contract?

In 2024, the Detroit Tigers went above and beyond expectations, giving supporters hope with an exciting run to Game 5 of the ALDS. But the franchise has a big obstacle in the form of shortstop Javier Báez’s large deal. Before the 2022 season, Báez signed a six-year, $140 million contract, however, he has fallen short of the lofty expectations that were placed on him.

Báez, who was formerly well-known for his explosive play and offensive ability, has had a terrible time at the plate lately. His once-feared power has drastically decreased, and his batting average has fallen. Both fans and analysts are concerned about this drop. Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer recently called Báez’s contract a “nightmare” for the Tigers, pointing to his troubles, poor plate discipline, and waning power.

One major barrier to the Tigers’ ability to make the personnel changes they need is the financial strain of Báez’s contract. The front office must decide whether to try to assist Báez regain his form or look into other options for allocating their resources, as they have committed more than $20 million to him annually through 2027.

The rise of youthful talent like Trey Sweeney, who was acquired in the Jack Flaherty trade, further complicates matters. Báez’s long-term position with the team is called into question by Sweeney’s potential at shortstop and second base. It’s getting harder to see Báez regaining his All-Star status after he has struggled for three straight seasons, including a dismal 2024 campaign.

What are the Tigers’ alternatives, then?

1. Wishing for a Comeback: The Tigers may wish for Báez to make a comeback. Maybe a shift in strategy or a fresh emphasis could enable him to return to his prior level of performance. But considering his previous setbacks, this seems unlikely.

2. Examining a Trade: Although a trade would be the best course of action, it would be difficult to move Báez and his large contract. To attract a trade partner, the Tigers may have to pay a portion of his salary or add prospects, which would further reduce their financial flexibility.

3. Examining a Release: The Tigers might proceed by clearing a roster place by releasing Báez, but this option comes at a high financial cost. Since the team would be liable for the balance of his contract, they would probably want to avoid taking this dramatic step unless it is required.

4. A Position move: Investigating a position move for Báez is an additional choice. He could be able to relieve some burden at second or third base thanks to his defensive versatility. But that wouldn’t solve his offensive issues, which are still the main issue.

The Tigers face a significant obstacle in Báez’s contract as they attempt to capitalize on their unexpected 2024 triumph. The future is unclear, and the front management must make a tough choice. Regardless of their decision, the Tigers need to resolve this issue if they want to keep improving in the upcoming seasons.
