First-team offense led by C.J. Stroud shines in the 20-12 victory.
In their second preseason game, the Houston Texans defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 20–12 at Acrisure Stadium on Friday night, showcasing the potency of their starting lineup.
Dell and Stroud Link for Early Lead
Playing with the first-team offense for two drives, quarterback C.J. Stroud was initially faced with a three-and-out on their opening possession. Nevertheless, a 22-yard punt return by receiver Tank Dell soon reenergized the offense and put the Texans in Steeler’s territory. Afterward, Stroud and Dell connected for a 34-yard touchdown throw, which gave the Texans an early 7-0 lead.
Leading Half
Throughout the first half, the Texans kept up their momentum, and running back Dare Ogunbowale scored on a four-yard touchdown run. Just before halftime, kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn added a 36-yard field goal to the lead, giving the Texans a commanding 17-0 edge.
Standouts on Defense
The first-team defenders’ preseason debuts, particularly linebacker Danielle Hunter’s, enhanced the Texans’ outstanding showing. Hunter recorded his first sack as a Texan and made an instant impression.
Halftime and Concluding the Victory
The early lead proved insurmountable, even though the Steelers were able to score two touchdowns in the second half thanks to the Texans’ reserve defense. On their last drive, Pittsburgh had an opportunity to tie the game, but Houston secured the victory when second-year safety Brandon Hill—a former University of Pittsburgh standout—intercepted a ball at his old haunt, Acrisure Stadium.
Next Steps
The Texans are currently returning to Houston from their Midwestern road trip. Their next preseason game is scheduled for this Saturday at 12 p.m. CT against the New York Giants.
Important lessons learned:
- The first-team offense, led by C.J. Stroud, demonstrated its potential, especially with Stroud’s relationship with Dell.
- Both the starting and reserve defenses for the Texans played well, with Hunter having a particularly big day.
- With his interception to secure the win, Brandon Hill demonstrated why he may be a valuable asset to the Texans’ defense.
The Texans’ victory over the Steelers is encouraging as they continue to get ready for the regular season. Before their next preseason game against the Giants, the team is gaining confidence and momentum thanks to solid performances from the offense and defense.
