Rachael Lillis, Iconic Voice of Pokémon’s Misty and Jessie, Passes Away at 46

The voice acting and animation industries are in mourning over the passing of a cherished talent. After a valiant fight with cancer, 46-year-old Rachael Lillis—best known for her famous roles as Misty and Jessie in the Pokémon series—passed died.

Veronica Taylor, who plays Ash Ketchum, announced Lillis’s passing on social media. Taylor characterized Lillis as “an extraordinary talent, a bright light that shone through her voice whether she was speaking or singing.” As Taylor’s memorial notes, the fans’ outpouring of love and support during Lillis’s battle was much appreciated.

Another voice actor for Pokémon, Eric Stuart, also sent his sympathy. “Rachael was one of the funniest, sweetest, and kindest people,” he stated. “A longtime close buddy. Watching the original Pokémon, especially Team Rocket, can help you remember her life. She will always be my comic companion in crime. Peace be with you, dear friend.”

Generations of fans who grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons were profoundly impacted by Lillis’s work. Her portrayals of the fiery Team Rocket villain Jessie and the water-type trainer Misty were iconic, but her abilities went far beyond those parts.

Lillis provided the voices for many Pokémon in the Pokémon universe, notably Jigglypuff, who she voiced again in the 2019 movie Detective Pikachu. She provided a voice for Super Smash Bros. as well. Her remarkable vocal range and capacity to convey a broad spectrum of emotions rendered her a versatile and in-demand artist.

In addition to Pokémon, Lillis provided the voice of popular cartoon programs including Winx Club and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as cherished anime series like Your Lie in April, Berserk, and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. Her credits in video games include Lego Jurassic World, Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, and Valkyrie Profile.

Lillis made more than only her appearances on stage for the entertainment industry. In addition, she wrote scripts and edited episodes for animated programs such as K.O. Beast and Boogiepop Phantom.

She is the second cast member from the original Pokémon movies to die after Meowth’s voice actress Maddie Blaustein passed away in 2008.

The family of Lillis has asked to remain private at this trying time, and a memorial ceremony has been scheduled for a later time.

Rachael Lillis left behind an amazing body of art that continues to carry her legacy. Both coworkers and fans will sincerely miss her kindness, talent, and passion.
