Game 3 of the NL Wild Card series saw the New York Mets defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 thanks to a spectacular comeback led by Pete Alonso, who made Major League Baseball history with a monster three-run home drive in the ninth inning. The Mets go to the National League Division Series (NLDS), where they will take on the Philadelphia Phillies, their division rivals, after this thrilling victory—their first in the postseason since 2015—begins.
An Uneasy Ambience in Milwaukee
As the game progressed, the atmosphere at Milwaukee’s American Family Field was electrifying. The pitching staffs of both clubs battled scorelessly for the first inning before Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick hit consecutive solo home runs to give the Brewers the lead in the seventh. Starting pitcher Corbin Burnes of the Brewers was outstanding; he silenced the Mets’ hitters and appeared to set the stage for a Brewers victory.
The Ninth-Inning Heroics of Alonso
Still, the Mets would not give up. They were behind 2-0 going into the ninth inning and had the difficult job of beating one of baseball’s best closers, Devin Williams.
After an eight-pitch struggle, Francisco Lindor’s walk to start a rally was followed by a critical single by Brandon Nimmo, demonstrating the Mets’ tenacity. Pete Alonso entered the batter’s box with the tying run on base and prepared to create baseball history.
Alonso used an 86 mph fastball to release his fury on a 3-1 count, sending the ball skyward into the right-field bleachers. His game-winning three-run homer turned the score to 3-2 and stunned the home crowd into silence, sending the Mets dugout and visiting fans into a frenzy.
This was a historic moment, not just a clutch hit. Alonso became the first player in MLB history to hit a go-ahead home run in a postseason game where his club was down in the ninth inning or later.
Concluding the Win
The Mets weren’t done yet. Later in the inning, Starling Marte’s RBI single gave them additional insurance and increased their advantage to 4-2.
Upon taking over in the seventh inning, reliever Edwin Díaz shut down any possibility of a Brewers rally. In 1.2 innings, he struck out three batters to seal the win and advance the Mets to the National League Playoffs.
