Hip-hop heavyweights Kendrick Lamar and Drake are getting closer in their verbal duel. Three days following the release of the intense “Euphoria,” Kendrick Lamar has dropped a second diss track called “6:16 in LA.” The attack is still ongoing with the surprise release, which aims to take down Drake’s inner circle at OVO and the viral success of “Toosie Slide.”
Posted on Instagram on Friday morning, Lamar’s most recent attack deftly mimics Drake’s pensive, time-stamped tunes, such as “4 PM in Calabasas.” Lamar accuses Drake of being surrounded by sycophants rather than encouraging self-reflection (“Have you ever thought that OVO was workin’ for me?”). Additionally, he makes fun of Drake’s dance-craze-fueled successes, saying the rapper is unable to escape this verbal combat by just dancing.
The fact that Jack Antonoff—who is well-known for his work with Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey—is a co-producer on the song with Lamar’s regular partner, Sounwave, may be the most unexpected turn of events.
Lamar’s quick-fire dissing approach is reminiscent of Drake’s 2015 rivalry with Meek Mill, during which he dropped the acerbic “Back to Back” and “Charged Up” songs in a matter of days. Lamar hinted at this decision even in “Euphoria,” mentioning Drake’s 2015 win and declaring, “I’ma get back to that, for the record.”
The hip-hop community is now anxiously awaiting Drake’s reply. With Cole J. Cole trapped in the midst, the feud, which has been simmering since March, has swiftly intensified into a full-fledged lyrical war.
