Disney Removes Showrunner’s Credit Over LGBTQ Pride Month Art: X-Men ’97 Controversy

Beau DeMayo, the original showrunner of X-Men ’97, has openly stated that he was denied credit for Season 2 by Disney, purportedly because of a fan art piece he shared on social media during LGBTQ Pride Month.
The Repercussions
Just one week before the highly anticipated animated series’ debut, Beau DeMayo was fired from his position as showrunner for X-Men ’97. He has now gone to social media to air his frustrations. DeMayo recently disclosed on X (formerly Twitter) that he received a letter from Disney informing him that his credit for Season 2 had been taken away. He gave the X-Men fan art he posted on Instagram to commemorate Gay Pride Month as the explanation.
The Differing Post
The June 4th Instagram picture in question included an artwork of Cyclops, an X-Men character, without a shirt. “Happy Pride!” was the hashtag DeMayo used in her compliments to the artist in the post’s caption.
The Story of X-Men ’97
Announced in November 2021, X-Men ’97 is a follow-up to the popular animated series X-Men: The Animated Series from the 1990s. It was acclaimed for being the first X-Men film produced by Marvel Studios and for keeping the visual aesthetic of the original series intact, as well as for having the original voice cast back.
Having been involved with the project from the start, DeMayo had even started developing Season 2. Nevertheless, he was fired from the production one week before the premiere of the first episode of Disney+. Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Studios’ streaming, television, and animation division, acknowledged DeMayo’s efforts but did not explain the abrupt departure.
DeMayo Is Not Silent Any Longer
DeMayo mentioned in passing on social media in April that Episode 5 was essential to his initial proposal and represented the experience of numerous viewers who grew up with the program. Nevertheless, neither DeMayo nor Disney have provided detailed justification for his termination.
The Most Recent Disclosure
According to a recent tweet by DeMayo, the LGBTQ Pride Month fan art he uploaded led to the removal of his credit for Season 2. He ends by saying that he needs to find a “safer space” to express himself for the time being, but he promises to share more in the future.
The Consequences
Discussions concerning creative freedom and the possible conflict between individual expression and business interests have been triggered by this episode. It also calls into doubt Disney’s dedication to inclusion and LGBTQ representation.
Fans are still waiting on Disney and DeMayo to provide more information, so the X-Men ’97 dispute is still developing.
