The Denver Broncos announced that Mike Westhoff, their associate head coach, had resigned from his position due to a health concern. The seasoned coach, who is known for his proficiency in special teams, will go back to his Florida home to concentrate on his health and welfare.
In 2023, the 75-year-old Westhoff joined the Broncos, bringing with him decades of NFL expertise. He is considered by many to be one of the league’s most creative and effective special teams coordinators.
“I want to thank Mike for everything he has done for the Broncos,” said Sean Payton, the head coach, in a statement. “In addition to being an amazing instructor, he is an even great guy. Our best wishes are with him as he recovers.
Westhoff started coaching the Baltimore Colts in 1979. Since then, he has worked for a number of NFL teams, such as the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and Miami Dolphins. He is renowned for his aggressive and unorthodox special teams strategy, which has frequently provided his teams with a major edge.
Westhoff has received accolades for his exceptional coaching throughout his career. He has helped several Super Bowl-winning teams and has won numerous NFL Special Teams Coach of the Year awards.
Despite his short tenure, he had a big impact on the Broncos. He instilled a spirit of discipline and accountability in the special teams squad, giving it fresh vitality and concentration.
With Westhoff gone, the Broncos’ coaching staff is left without a coach. The crew respects and agrees with his decision to put his health first, but they will miss his knowledge and leadership.
Payton went on, “Mike’s health is the most important thing,” “We are grateful for his contributions to the team and wish him a speedy recovery.”
Now, the Broncos will start looking for a new coordinator of special teams. Given his special blend of abilities and background, it will be difficult to find a suitable substitute for Westhoff.
Westhoff leaves a successful and inventive legacy when he retires from the game. For years to come, his influence on the NFL and the innumerable athletes he has taught will be felt. The Broncos organization and the entire NFL community wish him well in his recovery.
