Pop sensation Britney Spears and actor/model Sam Asghari have announced their formal divorce. They had been dating since 2016 and got married in 2022, but on Friday a Los Angeles judge officially ended their marriage.
This week’s divorce deal follows Spears’s resolution of unresolved financial and legal matters about her previous conservatorship with her father, Jamie Spears. Both Spears and Asghari will not get spousal support, it is established, even if the specifics of the divorce arrangement are kept private.
Asghari filed for divorce the month after Spears and Asghari made their breakup public in July 2023. Spears hinted at private reasons for the breakup in a brief social media message that followed the filing, but she made it clear that it was “nobody’s business.”
Celebrity-studded June 2022 wedding served as a symbol of Spears’ release from a 13-year legal conservatorship that severely curtailed her financial and personal liberties. Nevertheless, the union turned out to be brief.
Spears has now had three divorces. She was married to Kevin Federline from 2004 to 2007, and the two had two teenage sons together. Her 2004 marriage to Jason Alexander, a childhood acquaintance, was infamously called off after just 55 hours. After attempting to disrupt Spears’ wedding to Asghari, Alexander was charged.
Asghari first appeared in Spears’s 2016 music video for “Slumber Party,” which is when their romance started. One of the main reasons Spears fought so hard to remove her conservatorship in public was her wish to wed Asghari. September 2021 saw the couple announce their engagement.
Spears has released new music since the conservatorship ended, including a 2022 joint album with Elton John. She hasn’t resumed performing live, though, and she’s stated she doesn’t know what her future musical endeavors or stage intentions entail.
